CAAS Holds the 5th Global Forum of Leaders of Agricultural S&T (GLAST) in Hainan

Co-organized by the Government of Hainan, CAAS, FAO and CGIAR, the 5th Global Forum of Leaders of Agricultural S&T (GLAST-2016) was held in Lingshui Li Autonomous Region of Hainan. Mr. Qu Dongyu, Vice Minister of Agriculture, Ms. He Xiqing, Vice Governor of Hainan, Mr. Tang Huajun, President of CAAS, Ms. Kundhavi Kadiresan, Assistant Director General of FAO, together with Mr. Shenggen Fan, Director General of IFPRI, presented the opening ceremony of meeting. Mr. Wu Kongming, Vice President of CAAS, chaired the opening ceremony.
With the theme on “Eliminating poverty and hunger through S&T innovation”, the two-day forum provided a platform for participants to exchange ideas, shared experiences in poverty reduction through S&T innovation, and finally reached a consensus by releasing “Lingshui Declaration”. All the participants strongly appeal that scientific and enological innovation is vital for sustainable agricultural development, and is therefore critical to global food security and poverty elimination. International Cooperation Update

Tumor suppressor p53 protects mice against Listeria monocytogenes infection

Recently, the Porcine respiratory infectious disease innovation research teamled by Prof. Zhiyong Ma at Shanghai Veterinary Research Institute, Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences (CAAS) found that Tumor suppressor p53 protects mice against Listeria monocytogenes (LM) infection. This finding was published in the Scientific Reports in September 2016.
The tumor suppressor p53 is involved in the regulation of innate and adaptive immune responses, which plays an antiviral activity. However, whether p53 has anti-bacterial function remains unclear. In the present study, the research results showed that p53 knockout (p53-/-) mice were more susceptible to LM infection, which was manifested by a shorter survival time and lower survival rate.

Progress on Editing Rice Yield-related QTLs in Different Rice Varieties

Grain yield is the most important and complex trait for genetic improvement in crops; it is known to be controlled by a number of genes known as quantitative trait loci (QTLs). In the past decade, many yield-contributing QTLs have been identified in crops. However, it remains unclear whether those QTLs confer the same yield performance in different genetic backgrounds.
In the study, researchers from China National Rice Research Institute (CNRRI) and Yangzhou University performed CRISPR/Cas9-mediated QTL editing (GS3 and Gn1a) in five widely-cultivated rice varieties and obtained 10 novel genotypes. The results revealed that in all genetic back grounds the grain lengths of the gs3 and gs3gn1a mutants were increased compared to the WT. In addition, the grain number was also enhanced when Gn1a was mutated.

Genomic architecture of heterosis for yield traits in rice

Increasing grain yield is a long-term goal in crop breeding to meet the demand for global food security. Heterosis, when a hybrid shows higher performance for a trait than both parents, offers an important strategy for crop breeding. Many scientists have been carrying out the genetic basis of heterosis in many crops including rice, maize and sorghum.

Recently, scientists from Institute of Plant Physiology and Ecology (SIPPE), Shanghai Institutes for Biological Sciences, Chinese Academy of Sciences and China National Rice Research Institute (CNRRI), Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences successfully informed on the genomic architecture of heterosis for yield traits in rice. The New Progress of Gene Identifying Associated with Several Key Agronomic Traits in Peach

An important research progress which described genome-wide association study of 12 agronomic traits in peach was achieved by one team headed by Wang Lirong at the Zhengzhou Fruit Research Institute and published in Nature Communications in November, 2016. The paper was recommended to be put into the ‘Highlight’ column because of its significance. And the editor said that: Lirong Wang and Zhixi Tian and colleagues report genetic regions that are associated with twelve important traits relevant to the taste and appearance of the fruit, providing valuable genetic data that could be used to inform future breeding efforts. Biological Invasion accelerate species displacement

Invasive alien species that have established and become so abundant in new geographic areas as to cause harm are one of the most pressing global environmental concerns. As invasive alien species spread, they often displace indigenous species or establish alien species, thus altering ecological communities and adversely affecting agricultural pest management, human well-being, and biodiversity. Recently, Dr Yulin Gao, a researcher at State Key Laboratory for Biology of Plant Diseases and Insect Pests, Institute of Plant Protection, Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences (CAAS), in cooperation with a colleague from Oregon State University have published a review paper in the Annual Review of Entomology for their joint research on new understanding of species displacement. CAAS Offers Boutique PhD Education

Over 50 international PhD students from CAAS visited the CAAS-Daxing International Cooperation Base for Agricultural Research and Development in southern Beijing on Oct 13.
They first visited the Daxing Plant Nursery to study ornamental plants such as anthurium scherzeranum and marantaceae. Then they went to the Daxing Agricultural Technology Extension Station to learn about intelligent control systems for protected agriculture and other technologies.
This year, over a hundred international PhD students came to CAAS. Their research fields range from horticulture and entomology to biochemistry.
"The field trip was very informative. I was especially impressed with the Active Heat Storage-Release System for Greenhouse. I will learn more and apply that technology in my country," said Alia Anwar, one of the students. Read more >>

CAAS and Wageningen University Advance Cooperation on Greenhouse Horticulture

On Nov.28, the inauguration ceremony of Sino-Dutch Joint Research Center for Greenhouse Horticulture (Beijing) was held in the Institute of Environment and Sustainable Development in Agriculture (IEDA), CAAS. Vice President Li Jinxiang and Mr. Martin olde Monnikhof, Agricultural Counselor of the Netherlands in China attended and addressed the ceremony. Prof. Dong Hongmin, Deputy Director General of IEDA, CAAS and Dr. Ernst van den Ende, Managing Director of Plant Science Group, Wageningen UR signed the MOU on behalf of respective institution. The ceremony was hosted by Prof. Zhang Huijie, Deputy Director General of Department of International Cooperation, CAAS and invited more than 30 scientists and scholars from the Netherlands and China to witness the event. 2016 High Level Dialogue on “Lessons from Experience for Future Development of Biogas in Asia” Held in Chengdu

High Level Dialogue 2016 on “Lessons from Experience for Future Development of Biogas in Asia” under FAO-China South-South Cooperation Programme was held from December13-15, 2016 in Chengdu,Sichuan Province. The dialogue was hosted by Center of International Cooperation Service, Ministry of Agriculture (MOA) and Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and co-hosted by Biogas Institute of Ministry of Agriculture (BIOMA). Wang Jinbiao, Director of International Cooperation Division of Department of International Cooperation, MOA, Cai Ping, Secretary of the Leading Party Group of BIOMA, senior officers of FAO and representatives from Bangladesh, Cambodia, Indonesia, Lao PDR, Mongolia, Myanmar, Pakistan, Thailand and China attended the dialogue.
The theme of the dialogue was on biogas development in Asia with the focus on experience, opportunities and challenges. Read more >>

Scientific Cooperation Action Plan in Crop Protection was signed between Institute of Plant Protection, CAAS and Science and Technology Branch, Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada

DDG ZHANG Bujiang led a delegation of IPP visited AAFC, on 8-13 October, 2016, to discuss mutually interested issues including research direction, resource sharing, application of international collaboration programs, talent training and establishment of communication mechanisms and to sign a joint Action Plan for Collaborative Research in Crop Protection.
This was a fruitful visit in exchange of agricultural science and technology. DDG ZHANG Bujiang and Director Manjeet Sethi signed the Scientific Cooperation Action Plan in Crop Protection between IPP, CAAS and Science and Technology Branch, AAFC. Both Parties agreed to implement the Action Plan to cooperate and collaborate in following research fields: biology, genetics, genomics, and bioinformatics of agricultural crop pests and their infection and invasion mechanisms; Development of novel pest management technologies; Pesticide residue and food safety. DDG of BIOMA Meets with Chinese Ambassador in Mauritania

On October 14. 2016, Deputy Director General of BIOMA, Dr. Hu Guoquan met with Ambassador Wu Dong, the Chinese Embassy in Mauritania. Dr. Hu introduced and highly valued the 2016 Training Course on Biogas Utilization in Mauritania and expressed gratitude to Ambassador Wu and the Mauritanian Husbandry Technology Demonstration Center for their support to this training course.
Dr. Hu said that BIOMA attached great importance to this training course and sent an experienced faculty team to Mauritania to implement this program. Under the concerted efforts of different parts, this training course has proceeded smoothly and received positive feedback from participants. The training course lasts for 56 days, including theory presentations and practical training. It aims to help participants to master the technology and establish a foundation for the future application of biogas technology in Mauritania. Read more >>
